War and Society Since 1800: A Global History

War and Society Since 1800: A Global History

This program examines the social, cultural, and institutional impacts of war from 1800 to the modern era. Rather than focusing primarily on military strategy or theoretical frameworks, the course explores how war has shaped human societies and how, in turn, societies have shaped the nature of war.

Throughout the program, participants will analyze key themes such as military mobilization and recruitment, gender roles during wartime, civilian experiences, propaganda, state-building processes, resistance movements, and the long-term consequences of violence across different historical periods and regions. By engaging with influential scholarly works and historical case studies—from the Napoleonic Wars to contemporary conflicts—participants will develop a broader understanding of the complex relationship between warfare and social transformation.

Through guided readings and discussions, the program aims to encourage critical reflection on how war influences political institutions, social structures, cultural memory, and everyday life. The course will also explore how societies remember, commemorate, and interpret the legacy of war in the modern world.

The program will be conducted in person at the Süleymaniye Campus of İbn Haldun Üniversitesi. Participants who meet the attendance requirement will receive a Certificate of Participation.
