IHU Summer School Languages Program (Online)

IHU Summer School 2020 announces online program

(Modern Turkish, Ottoman Turkish, Arabic, Persian, Latin, and English)

8 June – 24 July 2020, IHU Zoom Platform

The Ibn Haldun University (IHU) Summer School Languages Program offers intensive instruction online in Modern Turkish, Ottoman Turkish, Arabic, Persian, Latin, and English for international students and professionals. This is a full Summer Term that over seven weeks offers twice the transferable credits as a regular 14-week semester. A wholly immersive experience is designed to comprise co-curricular and extra-curricular activities such as conversation tables and study hours; seminars by top scholars on Turkish history, politics, literature, and art; cultural events, movie screenings and, field trips to historical sites and archives, all online and country-specific adjusted to international time differences.

  • Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced levels are available in all languages
  • 20 hours per week for 7 weeks and 140 class hours (except English language component, see below)
  • Fully credit-transferable, equivalent to two normal semesters
  • Flexible, country-specific classes adjusted to international time differences
  • Tuition fee reduced from USD 2000 to USD 1500
  • A further discount available for students recommended by their academic advisors
  • Early application until 15th May, and 29th May as the final deadline

Students are given an online skill-based placement test in their chosen language, prepared and conducted by specialists and experienced instructors, after which they are placed at an appropriate level.

The English language component will take place over 7th July – 28th August, comprising eight weeks but including a week’s break for the Feast of Sacrifice. It will comprise a similarly intensive 18 hours of teaching per week, resulting in 126 hours of class time, equivalent to a full language prep term.

Class times will be flexible and country-specific. The Summer School Directorate will do everything possible to organize students into small “country groups” for which instruction will take place over locally reasonable hours. A minimum of 3 international students will be needed to launch each such class.

Language courses at all levels offer a “double-intensive” track. International best practice for language courses is 5 hours per week, coming to 70 hours over a 14-week Fall or Spring term. At the IHU Summer School, our “double-intensive” track is 7×20=140 hours. This is equivalent to two full semesters of language instruction in a typical US college course. All credits are fully transferable. Personal certificates will also be issued upon the successful completion of each course.

For all Early Applications until 17:00 (or 5 pm) Istanbul time on Friday, 15th May, an application fee of USD 20 will apply. For all Regular Applications until 17:00 (or 5 pm) Istanbul time on Friday, 29th May, this fee will be USD 50. All such application fees are non-refundable, but deductible from the tuition fee (of USD 1500 or 1250).

To apply, please fill out the online application form and submit the following documents.
